Breast reconstruction

If a breast has to be completely removed for oncological reasons, it can be reconstructed either immediately after removal or after a certain period of time. Two main reconstruction procedures are available: either an implant is used (i.e. a sack made of silicone, filled with silicone gel or saline), or tissue from the patient's back, stomach, buttocks or thigh is used. It is also possible to combine both.
If the second, healthy breast is clearly asymmetrical in relation to the reconstructed one, this can be rectified in a second operation at the same time as reconstructing the nipple and the areola. If both breasts are symmetrical after the first operation, the nipple and areola can be reconstructed under local anaesthetic.
Professor Wechselberger performs all breast reconstruction procedures in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Hospital of the Brothers of St. John of God Salzburg.
