Hand surgery

The hand is a highly complex organ needed for touching and grabbing. It functions through an interaction between individual bones, tendons, ligaments, muscles, nerves and joints.
Hand surgery is concerned with maintaining or restoring hand function. Medical treatment can be surgical or conservative in nature. The atraumatic procedure of plastic surgery and the use of microsurgical techniques take into account the complex anatomy.
Professor Gottfried Wechselberger has contributed to pioneering achievements in the field of hand surgery. He was a member of the transplant team that performed three double hand transplants at the University Hospital of Innsbruck – the world's first procedure of its kind.
He was also awarded the title "Specialist Hand Surgeon" by the Austrian Medical Association 2012.
